Chapter 1:
The chapter starts on a cold day in April of 1984 at a depressing apartment building called Victory Mansions. Winston Smith, a frail man, is walking up the stairs painfully because he has an ulcer on his right ankle. As he walks up, posters saying "Big Brother is Watching You" surrounds him. When he enters his apartment, his "telescreen" is described as always on and monitors thoughts which the thought police frequently watch. He describes seeing a minister outside his window, and that each ministry does the opposite of their name and runs the government. Winston takes his new diary out of a drawer and notices he unconsciously wrote "Down With Big Brother" over and over again. He is sure hi will be killed when he hears a knock on his door.
Chapter 2:
Winston opens the door fearfully to reveal it's only Ms. Pearson, his neighbor. She asks for help with her plumbing. Her children, junior spies, accuse him of thought crime and are very annoying. When he returns home, he writes in his diary he did a thought crime and he is surely going to be put to death.
