Illustrator, Chapters 1-2

Illustrator

"On each landing, opposite the lift shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move.  Big Brother Is Watching You, the caption beneath it ran." Pages 1-2

I chose this quote because the statement "Big brother is watching you really sums up the extent of control the government in Oceania has over it's citizens. The propoganda is meant to make the populus feel uneasy, and to second guess each of their actions, and due to the 'Thought Police' even their thoughts, as though the government's authority is always watching them.

  1. I thought that this was a perfect picture for this section because first of all, it perfectly matches how the picture was described in the book and the overall creepy mood. And secondly, as you said, it does a great job of depicting the Oceania society
